See the following press release from City Hall – the rain barrel sale and tree giveaway if coming up on June 1st!
St. Catharines residents can save water, energy and money with one stop at the Rain Barrel Sale and Free Tree Giveaway on Saturday, June 1.
St. Catharines residents can help themselves to a free tree and buy a rain barrel for only $40 (cash only) at the popular annual event set for the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supplies run out.
“Our residents are very environmentally conscious and so supportive of the City’s work to protect our environment for future generations,” said Mark Green, manager of environmental services. “Reducing household energy costs is one of many benefits of using rain barrels and planting trees.”
“This event has become an annual spring tradition and helping residents take action against climate change by making rain barrels and new trees more accessible is something the City takes pride in,” said Ilyse Norton, the City’s development horticultural technician.
Trees will be available on a first come, first served basis in three-gallon pots and are about three-to-four feet tall. They should easily fit inside a standard car. Four varieties will be available: Red Pines, Freeman Maples; Yellow Birches and Pagoda Dogwood (small variety). Residents must agree to plant and maintain the tree on their own property. Proof of St. Catharines residency is required and households are limited to one tree. Rain barrels will also be available on a first come, first served basis. Proof of St. Catharines residency is required, and each household is limited to two rain barrels.
Residents are not required to purchase a rain barrel to collect a free tree, but are welcome to do so if they choose. Visit http://www.stcatharines.ca/BarrelsAndTrees or call 905.688.5600 for more information.
