The following Press Release is out today.
May 2, 2018 – St. Catharines residents can improve their water conservation and reduce future energy costs at home with one stop at the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre on Saturday, June 2.
The Rain Barrel Sale and Free Tree Giveaway is back: residents can help themselves to a free tree and buy a rain barrel at a discount of $40 (cash only) at the popular annual event from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supplies run out.
“Our residents are very environmentally aware and they support the City work to protect our environment for future generations,” said Mark Green, manager of environmental services. “Reducing household energy costs is one of a number of benefits to using rain barrels and planting trees. This event supports our residents in their own environmental conservation efforts by making it easier for them to do these things at home and it’s something the City takes pride in.”
Trees will be available on a first come, first served basis in three-gallon pots and are about three-feet tall. They should easily fit inside a standard car. Four varieties will be available: Sweetgum, Bitternut Hickory; Tulip Tree and Eastern Redbud (small).
Residents must agree to plant and maintain the tree on their own property. Proof of St. Catharines residency is required and households are limited to one tree. City forestry experts will be available to answers questions.
